FAA Streamlines Commercial Space Approvals

Commercial spacecraft operators will now only have to hold one license that covers numerous qualifications.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced the implementation of a rule, which will streamline the process for launch and reentry of commercial spacecraft licensing for the likes of SpaceX and Blue Origin. The FAA originally introduced Part 450, which combined four old rules into one, during President Trump’s first administration. After that, Part 450 and the previous rules were applied simultaneously over a five-year transition period to provide operators with an adequate timeframe while they obtained a new license.

The FAA stated, “Part 450 reduces the number of times an operator needs an FAA license approval and allows one license for a portfolio of operations, different vehicle configurations and mission profiles, and even multiple launch and reentry sites.“

“We’re pleased to have flight-ready operators and vehicles successfully transition to a performance-based rule that unlocks flexibility while maintaining safety for the public,” said Deputy Associate Administrator Minh Nguyen for the FAA’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Administrator Bryan Bedford as he oversees the streamlining of FAA legal processes for spacecraft operators.
  • For FAA officials to be prudent as they guide operators through the licensing process.
